      New technologies propel us into exciting solutions and drive future advancements. The vital question of how to demonstrate results regarding plastics, however, must be addressed with accuracy and assurances. Consider the fact that plastic polymers as products began entering the mainstream no more than about 50 years, but testing indicates it will remain in our environment, in some way, for hundreds to thousands of years. It is also understood that the byproduct of fragmentation is just smaller particles of plastic, virtually rendering plastic a 'forever' product.

 

How, then, is the lifecycle of plastics being discarded into our environment known? 

 

     Independent testing conducted in accredited laboratories simulates and accelerate conditions found in specific environments such as landfills, debris piles or compost heaps. It is the best testing method possible and offers dependable results. In our case, the tests are designed to determine the length of time taken in these environments for the plastic polymers to convert and biodegrade as an end-of-life cycle, to natural humus or soil.  Our testing results target landfill environments, the most prolific and difficult conditions for biodegradable results. Environments above the ground such as compost or debris piles are not the main environments where plastic is discarded. BTS uniquely offers a BIODEGRADABLE-TO-SOIL end of life cycle product. Compostables, if disposed of in a certified composting facility, break down into fragmented plastic, not soil, like plant matter. 99.5% of all garbage in the US ends up in landfills, not in composting facilities, and we are not equipped to separate it out to send compostables to an FTC approved facility.

 

How do I know the formula actually works?

 

      The proprietary BTS base formula has been tested by independent laboratories replicating landfill test conditions. Biodegradation rates are measured according to ideal ASTM testing methods. BTS additives have successfully endured the ASTM D5511 test method to measure carbonaceous and methane gas produced validating the biodegradation process. It has also stood up under scrutiny in hundreds of third-party tests in scientific laboratories. MSDS and test results are available upon request.

Applications: What kind of plastics can be affected by the formulas?

Regarding Testing: BTS offers ASTM approved products. We do not allow private agencies such as BPI to establish applicable standards, which still must be ASTM approved. Agency approvals are not FDA approved and their claims are not government certified. Many agencies create their own standards and charging fees simply for the purpose of creating a created system do not override ASTM standards. BPI, for example, creates their own standards but must still be ASTM approved. They are a middleman. We go directly to the approval source and have ASTM testing and approvals on all BTS additives. Also, if there is an issue with a product, false or misleading claims are lost if testing is not FCC approved, something not offered by agency ‘standards’.
